Summary

Centralny Komitet Opieki Społecznej (The Central Committee of Welfare) was active in Poland in the years 1944–1949. It was established to replace the Central Welfare Coun-cil, functioning in the General Gover nment. The Committee dealt with social welfare for people in need and afected by the war – invalids, homeless, elderly, children and youth, single mothers, repatriates, and people liberated from the concentration and prisoner-of-war camps. It operated nursing homes, organized provision of food and distribution of clothing. Although theoretically aid to children and adults was treated equally, in the surviving fles in the Archives of Modern Records most information refers to the welfare of children and youth. Documentation for the welfare of adults is rather inadequate and carelessly prepared. Most information relates to nursing homes, food provision centres and elimination of beg-gary. The preserved materials reveal a clear picture of post-war difculties that the Commit-tee staf had to face.
