The eighteenth century, and particularly the reign of King Stanisław August Ponia-towski, was not a period of splendour of the Polish Commonwealth due to wars, internal problems, power struggles and many other developments which contributed to the fall, de-population and impoverishment of Polish towns. Many of them were destroyed. As regards Kraków in the days of King Stanisław one should be aware of the fact that foreigners who came to Poland from the rich West were accustomed to very diferent living conditions than those they found there. In the article the author discusses the accounts of four foreign travel-lers: Nathaniel William Wraxall, William Coxe, Johann Joseph Kausch and two Frenchmen – Fortia de Piles and Boiseglin de Kerdu.
