Summary
An important aspect of the discussion of the 1956 Hungarian uprising has its place in Po-lish historiography and school education. In the ofcial version, both in scholarship and in education, the biased picture of the “Hungarian October” remained until the end of the 1980s. It is important to ask whether a citizen educated in a free Poland and a student of a modern school has a sufcient knowledge about the so-called “Hungarian events”. The author re-sponded to this by giving a detailed analysis of the content of the curricula and textbooks. From the political breakthrough of 1989 to the end of the 1990s pupils received a broad and fairly objective picture of the events of 1956 in Hungary, while in the current curriculum, as a result of transferring the course of recent history to the upper secondary level, the “Hunga-rian events” are given more space than in the frst decade of the 21st century, but much less than in the 1990s.
