W 1563 r. na sejmie postanowiono o restytucji jurysdykcji grodzkiej w Stężycy. Nie oznaczało to jeszcze powstania odrębnego starostwa. Zobowiązano ówczesnego starostę radomskiego, do którego należała Stężyca, do ustanowienia odrębnego grodu i celebrowania tam roków sądowych. Do ostatecznego wydzielenia starostwa, zarówno w sferze majątku, jak i jurysdykcji, doszło w 1569 r. W 1582 r. urząd starosty objął Mikołaj Zebrzydowski. Majątek starostwa obejmował wówczas miasto i 30 wsi. W 1585 r. Zebrzydowski miał otrzymać kolejne starostwo sądowe – krakowskie. Zasada incompatibilitatis zmusiła go do opuszczenia Stężycy. Opróżnił urząd w listopadzie 1585 r., zdoławszy uprzednio wydzielić nową tenutę rycką, w której skład weszła większość dóbr stężyckich (25 wsi). Okrojone starostwo stężyckie przejął surogator Marcin Trojanowski, który w 1588 r. został nowym starostą i sprawował urząd do 1623.
At the Sejm of 1563 it was decided to restitute the castrensial jurisdiction in Stężyca. It did not mean a new captainship was established. The then captain of Radom, to whom Stężyca belonged, was just obliged to set up a separate office and celebrate court sessions there. The final division, both in terms of property and jurisdiction, took place in 1569. When Mikołaj Zebrzydowski assumed the captainship (1582) the estates belonging to the office included the town and 30 villages. In 1585 Zebrzydowski was supposed to assume captainship of Kraków. In accordance with the rule of incompatibilitas he vacated the office in November 1585, having previously taken over the majority of estates, i.e., 25 villages (captainship of Ryki). The profoundly reduced captainship of Stężyca was assumed by surogate captain Marcin Trojanowski, who became the new captain in 1588 and held the office until 1623
