W artykule przedstawiono nagłówki czasopism polskich w Ameryce ukazujące się na przełomie XIX i XX w. i będące najbardziej reprezentatywnymi w procesie kształtowania świadomości społecznej i kulturowej ówczesnych środowisk polonijnych. Artykuł identyfikuje najczęściej występujące elementy figuratywne oraz ich kombinacje w zdobnictwie nagłówków, a także interpretuje ich znaczenie w kontekście specyficznych warunków polonijnych w Stanach Zjednoczonych (brak cenzury politycznej i upowszechnienie kultury masowej). Podjęto także próbę określenia konstruowanego przez nich symbolicznie obrazu, nie tylko narodu i klasy społecznej, lecz także całej wyobrażonej wspólnoty emigracyjnej zwanej „czwartą dzielnicą” Polski.
The article presents the mastheads of Polish periodicals in America which were published at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and which were most representative in the process of shaping the social and cultural consciousness of Polish-American communities of that time. The paper identifies the most frequent figurative elements and their combinations in the masthead ornamentation and interprets their meaning in the context of the specific conditions of the Polish diaspora in the United States (lack of political censorship and the spread of mass culture). An attempt is also made to determine the image they symbolically constructed, not only the nation and social class but also the entire imagined emigration community called the “the fourth district” (czwarta dzielnica) of Poland.
