W styczniu 1865 r. Aleksander Bezak mianowany został nowym generałem-gubernatorem kijowskim, podolskim i wołyńskim. Otrzymał od cara zadanie wzmożenia działań depolonizacyjnych i rusyfikacyjnych w Kraju Południowo-Zachodnim. Treść korespondencji Bezaka z Alek-sandrem II z 1865 r. pozwala ocenić, jakie zadania generał-gubernator uważał za najważniejsze do zrealizowania i jaki był stosunek władcy do jego propozycji. Uwagę zwraca podkreślanie przez Bezaka potrzeby bezwzględnej walki z wpływami Kościoła katolickiego w kraju.
In January 1865, Alexander Bezak was appointed new Governor-General of Kiev, Podolia and Volynia. He was assigned the mission to intensify the de-Polonisation and Russification activities in the Southwestern Krai. The contents of Bezak’s correspondence sent in 1865 to Alexan-der II enable one to examine which tasks the Governor-General considered to be most crucial and how the Tsar reacted to his proposals. Close attention should be drawn to the fact that Bezak stated the necessity to struggle ruthlessly with the influence of the Catholic Church in the Krai.
